A Lufthansa Upgrade Story: When It Pays to Be Flexible
Imagine booking a last-minute flight, only to find yourself in a situation where your seat assignment is up in the air, literally! This is exactly what happened to me on a recent Lufthansa journey from Frankfurt to Copenhagen. But here's where it gets interesting: I decided to take a chance and upgrade my economy ticket to business class at the gate, and it turned out to be a decision that paid off in more ways than one.
The Upgrade Experiment
I had booked my Lufthansa economy ticket using partner points, a last-minute decision after my Scandinavian Airlines flight was canceled. When I checked in online, I realized I was on a waitlist for a seat assignment, which was a bit worrying. I headed to the Lufthansa Business Lounge, accessible thanks to my Amex Platinum benefits, and enquired about the possibility of an upgrade. The agent informed me that cash upgrades were only available at the gate, and here's where things got a bit confusing.
The lounge agent claimed I wasn't confirmed on the flight but was only waitlisted. I was puzzled, as I had a confirmed ticket, but she insisted. This led me to the gate, where I approached the friendly gate agent about the upgrade. She confirmed it was possible and that the cost depended on the ticket type. After a quick calculation, she quoted me 150 EUR for the upgrade, and I decided to take the plunge, despite my initial hesitation.
A Delayed Flight's Silver Lining
As I boarded the flight on time, I was ready for a quick hop to Copenhagen. However, things took an unexpected turn. By 10:20 AM, everyone was onboard, but there was no sign of an imminent departure. Then came the announcement: none of the bags had been loaded, and it would take another 40 minutes. The captain expressed confusion over the lack of ground handlers, and the situation seemed chaotic.
Twenty minutes later, the purser's concerned faces hinted at more bad news. The captain then announced that due to the delayed bag loading, we had missed our takeoff slot. With high winds in Copenhagen, our new takeoff slot was set for two hours later. The pilot's attempt at a positive spin on the situation made me chuckle: "I hope this information does not cause you too much inconvenience."
The flight attendants, though not the most cheerful, did their best. In business class, they offered passengers a choice to dine in the air or on the ground. Economy passengers received a free coffee or soda. It's worth noting that Lufthansa's intra-Europe catering has improved since they ditched the "Tasting Heimat" concept.
Fortunately, our delay was reduced, and we took off at 12 PM, only 1hr40min after our scheduled departure. We landed around 1:10 PM and reached the gate shortly after. In the end, I spent about 3hr20min in my business class seat, and I was grateful for the upgrade.
While business class isn't luxurious, it's certainly more comfortable than economy, especially with the extra shoulder space. I was able to stay productive on my laptop during the ground delay and most of the flight.
The Bottom Line
Lufthansa allows cash upgrades for partner award tickets at the departure gate, and I'm glad I took advantage of this option. My 150 EUR upgrade ensured I had a guaranteed non-middle seat, which was worth the peace of mind.
