Ebike Adventure in France’s Loire Valley: Vineyards, Châteaux, and Luxury Cycling (2026)

The Loire Valley, with its enchanting chateaux and picturesque vineyards, has long been a haven for artists and a source of inspiration for many. As I embarked on my own journey through this region, I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder and a desire to embrace the romanticism that the Loire exudes.

A Cyclist's Paradise

For a fair-weather cyclist like myself, the idea of a cycling holiday was initially daunting. But with the option of electric bikes, or e-bikes, the prospect became much more appealing. My partner, an avid mountain biker, and I found the perfect compromise with Cycling for Softies, a tour company catering to those seeking a more relaxed cycling experience.

A Renaissance Beauty

Our adventure began at Château du Rivau, a Renaissance gem nestled in Lémeré. This chateau, with its contemporary art gallery housed in ancient turrets, offered a unique blend of old and new. The reimagined classics by modern artists, such as Pierre Ardouvin's playful Ile Mona, added a modern twist to the historic setting.

A Culinary Delight

The evening's dinner at the chateau's gourmet restaurant, Jardin Secret, was a true feast. Led by the talented Andrea Modesto, formerly second-in-command to the renowned Joël Robuchon, we indulged in stuffed courgette flowers, roast duck, and local cheeses, all paired perfectly with a bottle of Chinon.

Cycling Through Paradise

The next morning, we set off on our e-bikes, eager to explore the Loire's beauty. The route was a breeze, and we glided through vineyards and past farmhouses draped in honeysuckle. We joined La Loire à Vélo, a 560-mile cycling route, and soon found ourselves at the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers.

A Day of Indulgence

After a leisurely lunch and a pastis-induced detour, we arrived at Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, one of France's most beautiful villages. Our accommodation for the night, L'Hôtel de Fontevraud L'Ermitage, was set within the grounds of the UNESCO-listed Fontevraud Abbey. The hotel's almost monastic vibe added to the charm of the stay, and we enjoyed a candlelit picnic in the gardens.

Easy Cycling, Beautiful Scenery

Day two saw us becoming more accustomed to the cycling routine. The route was a pleasure, with its traffic-free paths and scenic views. We drifted past poplar trees and weeping willows, the air filled with the scent of hay and apples. It was a truly immersive experience, allowing us to connect with the natural beauty of the Loire.

Regal Accommodations

Our home for the next two nights was the elegant Château de Rochecotte, near Langeais. With its ethereal views across the valley, it felt like a true indulgence. The dinner that evening was a lavish affair, featuring fresh langoustine and locally sourced pork.

A Fairytale Castle and Geometric Gardens

On our final day, we cycled through medieval towns and past orchards, eventually reaching Château de Villandry. This 16th-century Renaissance castle, with its tiered gardens, was a highlight. The geometric gardens, restored by Joachim Carvallo, offered a unique and captivating experience.

A Memorable Journey

This e-bike tour of the Loire Valley was a delightful adventure. It allowed us to explore the region's beauty at our own pace, with the added benefit of electric assistance. The combination of historic chateaux, stunning scenery, and indulgent culinary experiences made it a truly memorable journey.

Personally, I think the Loire Valley is a hidden gem, offering a unique blend of history, nature, and luxury. It's a destination that truly captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression.
