Brace yourself for a hard-fought 2-1 win that keeps Arsenal cruising at the top of the Premier League table. Jurrien Timber’s second-half header proved the difference, preserving our five-point cushion over Chelsea.
The match was a roller coaster from the start. We drew first blood when William Saliba steered home his first league goal of the season after a sustained spell of pressure. Chelsea responded in stoppage time of the first half, turning a corner into an own goal as Piero Hincapie inadvertently redirected the ball past his keeper, level for the break.
Set pieces remained a recurring theme in this London derby, and we reclaimed the lead through another corner routine. Timber rose highest to head in from close range, capitalizing on a cross from the left. The turning point came late in the game when Pedro Neto picked up a second yellow card with about 20 minutes to play, tilting the balance further in our favor.
David Raya delivered a series of crucial saves to protect the lead as Chelsea pressed for an equalizer, helping us extend our unbeaten run against the Blues to 11 games.
Corners in focus
After a week of celebrating the North London derby triumph, Mikel Arteta kept faith with the same starting XI—a rare unchanged lineup since November—and the players carried that momentum into the opening stages. We pressed Chelsea’s backline aggressively, with Viktor Gyokeres nearly winning the ball near the edge of the box and Martin Zubimendi testing the keeper with a wayward shot. Ebere Eze also tried his luck from midfield as the early chances arrived.
We broke the deadlock on 21 minutes courtesy of a well-worked set piece. Bukayo Saka whipped the corner into a crowded area; Gabriel headed it back toward the danger zone, Saliba extended, and the ball found the net via a deflection off Mamadou Sarr.
Despite the early advantage, the trend of the season—teams exploiting set pieces—reasserted itself, and Chelsea drew level before the break. A dangerous Reece James corner was flicked back by Declan Rice’s clearance and looped into the net through a miscue from Hincapie, giving Chelsea the momentum heading to halftime.
Timber’s decisive moment
The break brought a positive response from Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea side, but Raya answered immediately with two sharp saves inside the first eight minutes of the second half. He stopped Enzo Fernandez’s drive and then, after a corner was flicked on at the near post, denied Joao Pedro with a well-positioned save.
Arsenal found a breakthrough again on 66 minutes. A corner from Rice found its way into the box and Timber was left unmarked to head home, restoring our lead. That goal marked our 16th Premier League strike from a set piece this season, tying the record for most goals from corners in a single campaign with nine games still to play.
Raya’s heroics continue
The encounter remained tense. On 69 minutes Neto received a second yellow for a challenge on Gabriel Martinelli, giving us an extra-man advantage to press for a third. Eze and Saka linked up for a promising chance for Eze, but David Sanchez stood firm to keep Chelsea in the contest.
As the clock wound down, a powerful Caicedo strike skimmed just past the post, and Garnacho sent a dangerous cross that Raya smartly parried away. In stoppage time, Pedro’s bicycle kick was saved by Raya, and a late offside call unmasked Liam Delap as the ball crossed the line—correctly ruled out, sealing the win for Arsenal.
The result kept us five points clear at the summit with nine games remaining.
